Wordpress 2.5
April 2, 2008 by Bob
Last weekend, Wordpress 2.5 was released! Have you upgraded your Wordpress site yet? I have not done it 100% yet, but it is something that I am still working on with my many Wordpress sites.
I am wondering, though, do you think that Wordpress is still the way to go for a website or blog? I have been thinking about this for several months now. I have a couple of reasons for the question:
- Wordpress is the most popular blogging client. No doubt. That, though, can have positive and negative sides. First, since it is so popular, it is the default target for people with malicious intentions. For example, if somebody wants to hack a website, figuring out a vulnerability in Wordpress is the best way to go. With just one vulnerability, he can hack millions of sites, if he chooses to do so.
- Because Wordpress is a hacking target, that means that there are constant updates coming down the tunnel. It seems like Wordpress is getting new versions on at least a monthly basis these days. For somebody like me, who has a ton of sites, this means that doing all the upgrades can be a time consuming job.
Because of these factors, I have been considering that perhaps it is time to move to another platform. Yes, I do believe that Wordpress is the best out there, but the considerations above make me wonder if it is the right way to go.
What do you think? Another blog platform? Maybe a CMS (Content Management System) site?
Let me know what you are using, I’d like to take a look and see what others have going!

Bob,
I have two sites now and I’m sticking with WordPress even though I’ll be updating a second time in only the last few months.
If there is any problem with security on WP, I’m sure that there will be a quick fix.
Hi Kevin Smith - Nice to hear from you. I am at the stage now of exploring the options. Am feeling like making a move (at least partly) away from WP, and exploring what else is out there. I completed upgrading to 2.5 the other day, and have found a number of things that I really don’t like about it. Maybe I’ll adjust to the changes, though!
Yea, I’ve been wondering about all the so-called upgrades for 2.5. I’m just getting comfortable with the way it is now. I can’t upgrade till Fantastico is upgraded on cpanel.
I think it will be the same for all free, open source platforms, in that these platforms are free so we can only expect so much. I would think that if one pays for a certain blogging platform, one can expect tighter security. I don’t even know of any, but I’m sure there are some out there. Keep us informed if you come across anything that you think is more secure than WP
I’m also exploring a CMS, a Course Management System, to house my content for my tutoring business.(Not sure if it’s the same as what you’re talking about) I’m looking at Moodle, and it’s open source and free. It’s the fastest growing and has a lot of online support.
Hi Kevin - the thing I was talking about when I said “CMS” is a “Content Management System” which is sort of like a blog, but more geared toward handling more content than a blog usually does.
Hi Bob,
I regularly read your liveinthephilippines.com site as well as the mindano.com blog, both great blogs by the way… anyway on reading your piece about wordpress 2.5 I wanted to say that I have a couple of websites which have been based on cms software… I was using joomla and had also been looking into drupal… however although they both offer some great functionality I found that overall Wordpress was a lot simpler (and in case of Joomla) much faster at loading pages…
However, I’m not sure if you are aware of him but there is a bloke who is pretty much taking the lead on wordpress templates. He has a number of customisable templates but in particular to look at are ‘revolution’ and ‘options’. They are probably the best templates you can find for wordpress, providing maximum usability and if you have any problems this bloke will answer your questions and there are also plenty of tips from other users of his themes. His name is Jusin Tadlock ( a link for his options them which I use on my own site http://www.atlantisarchives.org can be found here: http://justintadlock.com/archives/2008/02/24/options-wordpress-theme
Oh, by the way… did I mention his templates are 100% free and I have yet to see a template that you have to pay for that offers as much as his templates. Don’t worry I’m not affiliated with him or anything I just came across his site by chance and am very satisfied with the wordpress templates he produces and they are well worth noting if you use wordpress.
Hi Alistair - Thanks for sharing that link, that fellow does have some nice themes to choose from, and as you say, the price is right!
