A good reason for Filipinos to get more active in Online Earning

April 3, 2008 by Bob

For today, I want to talk to those of you who want to get a job in the Philippines.  That is mostly Filipinos.  Some foreigners are always e-mailing me though, asking the question:

What kind of job can I get in the Philippines?

I have answered that question so many times - if I had a Peso for each time I could probably retire soon!

But, did you know that employment laws here in the Philippines are much different than in the West.  For an example of this, I want to point you over to my friend Cathy’s site, where she is showing some job opportunities in General Santos City.  Here is a look at a sample job opening:

Warehouse Associate (4)

  • Male; At least High School Graduate

  • Not more than 30 years old

There are two glaring things that will stick out to foreigners.  First, they are advertising for “Male” employees for the opening.  This would be blatantly illegal in the West.  A male or female must be considered for any job available.  The second thing that blares out is “Not more than 30 years old.”  This also would be illegal.  If such an ad showed up in the States, the company would be sued many times over, and would lose, no doubt.

I want to point out, I am not criticizing Cathy, she is a good friend, and I value her greatly.   There is nothing wrong with what she is listing, because it is perfectly legal here.

That being said, though, if you want to get a job in the Philippines (Filipino or Foreigner), are you willing to put up with these kind of restrictions?  I wouldn’t.  But, this is why I am more open to earning my own living, working for myself.  And, I believe that earning that living online is the way to go.

What do you think?  Isn’t it time to start carving out your online niche and earning money through it?

Even I have started to look into online earning possibilities (in prep for the move). Have to better define my niche, then start blogging. May start with WordPress but will give others a look. Thanks for your blog - it seems to give me courage!

Hi Paul - Congratulations on starting the quest toward becoming an Internet Entrepreneur! I think that you will find that it is a nice lifestyle. While it does require that you work, and work hard, you also have a lot of freedem! Good luck!

A good point, Bob. The way jobs are advertised here in the Philippines is a blatant example … but as someone who reached the age of 60 while still employed in the US … and who once had a job formally investigating discrimination complaints … I cna tell you the real difference is in the degree of ‘discrimination’, not the underlying facts of it.

Most companies in either country don’t want people over 40 … they will almost never say so, out loud, but they find subtle ways … and even with good lawyers, sometimes get caught.

It is so much smarter, in my view to get yourself independent from the ‘begging for a job’ routine. Paul, blogging can be made into profitable work, so I wish you the best there, but do make sure you know there are many other legitimate ways to make a decent living using online resources … you just need to look past the glitter and see where some people are actually earning. best of luck to all … it certainly can be done.

Hi Dave Starr - Yes, it’s true that such age discrimination happens at companies worldwide. It’s a real shame too, because companies can really benefit from the experience that older people can offer! That being said, my opinion is set in stone - self employment is the way to go!
